Families Demand Federal Inquiry Following Deadly Bondi Beach Attack

Families of the victims killed in the December 14 attack at a Hanukkah festival on Bondi Beach have called on the Australian federal government to launch a royal commission. In an open letter to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese released Monday, relatives of the 15 deceased victims demanded a higher-level investigation into alleged security failures and rising antisemitism, describing the current situation as a "national crisis."

The attack in Sydney resulted in 15 deaths and 40 injuries, making it the country's worst mass shooting since 1996. Authorities identified the suspects as 50-year-old Sajid Akram, who was killed by police at the scene, and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, who was wounded and now faces 15 counts of murder. Police have alleged the assault was inspired by the Islamic State group.

Prime Minister Albanese resisted the call for a federal royal commission, arguing that such a process would take too long to provide necessary answers. Instead, he announced an inquiry led by retired bureaucrat Dennis Richardson to examine legal and procedural failings, with findings expected in April. The Prime Minister stated that the federal government would support a separate royal commission pledged by the New South Wales government.

In the wake of the violence, New Year's Eve celebrations at Bondi Beach have been canceled, and security will be significantly increased for Sydney’s main fireworks display. Amid the tragedy, 43-year-old bystander Ahmed al Ahmed has been recognized for tackling and disarming one of the gunmen. A global fundraising campaign for al Ahmed, who was hospitalized after the intervention, has raised more than AU$2.5 million.
