Authorities have identified Claudio Neves-Valente, 48, as the person responsible for two related shootings in mid-December that left three people dead and nine injured. Following a multistate manhunt, officials reported that Neves-Valente died by suicide.
The first incident occurred on December 13, when a gunman opened fire at Brown University, killing two students and injuring nine others. Two days later, on December 15, Nuno Loureiro, a 47-year-old scientist, was fatally shot at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts. Investigators confirmed Neves-Valente was responsible for both attacks.
Neves-Valente was a Portuguese national and a former Brown University physics student from 2000 to 2001 who withdrew by 2003. According to Brown's president, the suspect had no recent affiliation with the university. Authorities said that while Neves-Valente and Loureiro had studied together, they had no recent contact, and there was no indication Loureiro anticipated a threat.
A possible motive was suggested by Dr. Bruno Goncalves, president of Portugal’s Institute of Plasma and Nuclear Fusion, who stated the "strongest theory" is that Neves-Valente resented Loureiro's academic and professional success. Goncalves claimed this resentment was one-sided and developed years after they were students together. Law enforcement officials described the attack on Loureiro as a deliberate, unilateral act of violence.
Loureiro was the director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center and was described as a world-renowned researcher in his field. He was a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, noted as the highest U.S. government honor for early-career researchers.
