A large-scale fraud scandal involving the misappropriation of hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer funds is under scrutiny in Minnesota. Teirab claimed that participants, who he said were largely but not exclusively from the city's Somali population, discovered how to obtain government reimbursements and coordinated with each other. He also leveled accusations against state officials, alleging Gov. Walz was responsible for appointing heads of departments that disbursed the funds and claiming Attorney General Keith Ellison failed to investigate in a timely manner. Teirab further alleged Rep. Ilhan Omar was aware of the activity.
In response to the scandal, President Donald Trump has announced that his administration will terminate Temporary Protected Status for Somalis in Minnesota. He also said he would order a reexamination of green-card holders from Somalia.
