• Evidence connects the suspect to the crime scene and materials. An FBI agent's affidavit reportedly cites multiple forms of evidence against the suspect, Brian Cole Jr. This includes cellphone data placing him near the Republican and Democratic headquarters, his vehicle being identified by a license plate reader, and records showing he purchased components used for making explosives.
• The planted devices were assessed as being highly dangerous. According to the FBI, the two pipe bombs were viable and could have resulted in serious injury or death had they detonated. The devices were discovered on January 6, 2021, a day of significant law enforcement activity, but were planted the day before.
• The suspect faces serious federal charges for his alleged actions. Cole is charged with attempted malicious destruction by fire and explosives, as well as transporting an explosive device across state lines.
