• Police are actively cracking down on illegal liquor establishments. A police spokesperson described mass shootings at unlicensed bars as a "serious problem." In response, authorities have taken significant action between April and September of this year, closing over 11,000 illegal taverns and arresting more than 18,000 individuals for their involvement in illegal liquor sales.
• An investigation is underway to find the individuals responsible for the attack. The South African Police Services are currently searching for three male suspects. According to the police spokesperson, at least three unknown gunmen reportedly entered the hostel and began shooting randomly at the group gathered inside.
• Officials identify illegal firearms as the primary tool used in homicides. Despite South Africa having relatively strict gun laws, officials report that a large number of killings are carried out using illegal firearms. These illicit weapons are considered by authorities to be the leading cause of death in homicides.
