Federal authorities are prosecuting what they have described as the country's largest COVID-19-era fraud scheme, which is centered in Minnesota. The investigation involves a nonprofit named Feeding Our Future and its partners, accused of fraudulently obtaining hundreds of millions of dollars from federal child-nutrition programs. The funds, originating from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, were administered by the Minnesota Department of Education. Governor Walz has condemned comments from former President Donald Trump about the Somali community's connection to the fraud, calling them "vile, racist lies." Walz stated it is "lazy" to demonize an entire community for the actions of a few individuals. Republican candidate Kristin Robbins said that while she believes "the bulk of the fraud" is within the Somali community, many "of the best whistleblowers are also in the Somali community." Federal officials have reportedly expanded their investigation to include separate fraud schemes in housing assistance and other services.
