• A suspect has been arrested and charged in the pipe bomb case. According to four people with knowledge of the development, the FBI has arrested 30-year-old Brian Cole of Virginia. The sources state that Cole has been charged with setting the two pipe bombs that were placed outside the national committee headquarters for both the Republican and Democratic parties.
• The arrest follows a comprehensive, multi-agency investigation. The nearly five-year federal investigation involved the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and both Washington D.C. and U.S. Capitol police. Authorities conducted over 1,000 interviews and analyzed nearly 40,000 video files as part of their extensive effort to identify a suspect.
• Authorities utilized public appeals and surveillance evidence in the search. The FBI had offered a reward of up to $500,000 for information that would lead to an arrest in the case. The agency had also previously released surveillance footage that it said depicted a person wearing a face mask and a gray hoodie placing the devices on the evening of January 5, 2021.
