A recent poll indicates a stark contrast in how Democratic and Republican voters perceive their respective party's leadership. The survey, conducted from October 18-21, found that 81% of voters who supported Donald Trump in 2024 identify him as the current leader of the Republican Party. In contrast, the most frequent response among 2024 Kamala Harris voters to an open-ended question about the Democratic leader was "I don't know" or a similar variation, at 21%.
According to the poll results, 16% of Harris voters named her as the party's leader, while 11% said "nobody" leads the party and 6% identified California Governor Gavin Newsom. One Democratic strategist, Jared Leopold, stated that it is "pretty standard for a party that is out of power" to not have a clear leader. The survey was conducted in the weeks before Democrats achieved a series of victories in off-cycle elections.
The poll also modeled how partisan loyalty affects voters' economic choices. It found that the median Trump voter would accept a hypothetical bill that raised their monthly taxes by about $65 if Trump endorsed it, over a bill that saved them money but did not have his support. According to the poll, these voters would also favor a Trump-backed bill even if it resulted in approximately 2,000 lost jobs in their state.
Conversely, the poll found that the median Harris voter would be willing to forgo a $33 monthly tax cut to oppose a bill supported by Trump. The findings suggested Trump’s endorsement had more than double the influence on his base compared to an endorsement from Republican lawmakers. The positions of Democratic lawmakers had no statistically significant effect on Trump voters' choices, according to the survey.
The poll of 2,051 U.S. adults has a margin of error of ±2.2 percentage points. Its findings were released after Democrats secured wins in several statewide races, including gubernatorial contests in Virginia and New Jersey.
