Republican Representative Elise Stefanik announced on Friday that she is running for governor of New York, positioning herself for a potential 2026 challenge against the incumbent, Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul. Stefanik, 41, has represented New York's 21st Congressional District since 2014.
In her announcement, Stefanik began tying Gov. Hochul, 67, to New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old socialist. Stefanik accused Hochul of making New York unaffordable and claimed she yielded to a "Defund the Police, Tax Hiking Communist" agenda. In an interview, Stefanik alleged that Hochul endorsed Mamdani, whom Stefanik called "a raging anti-Semite, pro-Hamas communist." In response, a Hochul campaign official called Stefanik "Trump's 'number one cheerleader'" and accused her of trying to bring the former president's "chaos" to the state. The official said Hochul is focused on lowering costs and cutting taxes.
Both candidates could face primary contests. Gov. Hochul is being challenged by her lieutenant governor, Antonio Delgado. On the Republican side, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman is reportedly considering a gubernatorial run. State Republican Party Chairman Ed Cox has endorsed Stefanik, describing her as a "unifier" and a "warrior."
A Siena poll from September showed Hochul leading Stefanik 52% to 27% in a hypothetical matchup. In 2022, Hochul won re-election by just over six points, the best performance for a Republican gubernatorial nominee in the state since 2002. Former President Donald Trump had previously nominated Stefanik to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in November 2024, but withdrew the nomination months later, stating he wanted her to remain in Congress.
