Left Perspective
• The interview was criticized for failing to challenge controversial statements. Podcast host Tucker Carlson did not challenge influencer Nick Fuentes when Fuentes stated he was a "fan" of Joseph Stalin during a recent interview. Historian Victor Davis Hanson was among those who criticized Carlson, specifically for allowing Fuentes to "remain unchallenged" on his show.
• The initial defense of Carlson was described as a poor choice. The president of the Heritage Foundation, Kevin Roberts, initially released a video defending Carlson from what he termed a "venomous coalition." In a subsequent staff meeting, Roberts apologized for this defense, referring to his "terrible choice of words" and admitting he had made a mistake.
• Some conservatives believe the movement should reject such associations. A veteran scholar at the foundation, Robert Rector, reportedly spoke at the staff meeting and recalled how the conservative movement had previously worked to expel anti-Semitism and "lunatics." According to a summary of the meeting, Rector described Carlson's show as being like "stepping into a lunatic asylum."
