The BareStory
Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a former congresswoman and Navy pilot, won the New Jersey gubernatorial election on November 4, 2025, defeating Republican Jack Ciattarelli. The victory was part of a series of Democratic wins in off-year elections, which also saw Abigail Spanberger win the governorship in Virginia and Zohran Mamdani elected mayor of New York City.
According to one report, the race was called on Tuesday evening before 9:30 p.m., at which time Sherrill was leading Ciattarelli, a former state assemblyman, by over 14 points with 61 percent of votes reported. The same report noted that during the campaign, questions arose concerning Sherrill's involvement in a 1994 Naval Academy cheating scandal. Sherrill acknowledged she did not walk at her graduation as punishment, and the report stated her explanation for the punishment changed during the campaign.
One report also detailed the growth of Sherrill’s financial portfolio during her time as a congresswoman, citing financial disclosures that showed her assets increasing from a range of $733,209–$4,321,000 in 2019 to $4,840,076–$13,975,000 by 2024. The report further stated she paid a $400 fine after failing to disclose stock sales.
Following the elections, President Donald Trump suggested his name not being on the ballot contributed to the Republican losses and also cited an ongoing government shutdown as a partial cause, according to an analysis by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Gingrich described the results as a "smashing Democratic victory" and argued that Republicans must find ways to motivate voters when Trump is not running.
How it may affect me
As a U.S. reader:
• The election outcome may increase pressure on politicians to resolve the ongoing government shutdown, which was cited as a factor in the Republican losses.
• Republican leaders may re-evaluate election strategies, particularly on how to motivate voters when Donald Trump is not on the ballot.
• Reports on the victor's finances and past conduct could heighten public calls for financial transparency and accountability from all elected officials.
